Tri-college Jewish a cappella

Chaverim is a tri-college, co-ed Jewish a cappella group, with members of many faiths from Swarthmore, Haverford, and Bryn Mawr Colleges. We sing Hebrew, Ladino, Yiddish, and English songs, including traditional Jewish songs, Israeli rock music, and original compositions. The group, founded in the Spring of 2000, has promising engagements on all three campuses and in the surrounding community. Our purpose is to bring music of Jewish culture to all three colleges, to interact with Jewish, faith-based, cultural, and musical groups at Swarthmore, Haverford and Bryn Mawr, and, most importantly, to sing. Chaverim is a unique group in that it fosters interaction among the three colleges and shares Jewish/world musical culture with the tri-college community. Not only are we the only tri-college musical group, but we are also the only Jewish-oriented musical group at the three colleges.

Chaverim rehearses twice a week, once at Swarthmore and once at Haverford. Each semester we perform at Swarthmore's a cappella Jamboree, at the Bi-co's Final Jam, and at concerts for parents and prospective student at each of the three schools. Each semester we schedule one or two concerts of our own at Swarthmore and/or Haverford with guest performance groups. We also book one or two concerts in the community at large. We perform for the freshmen during each school's orientation week or activities fair in the fall and we perform in Columbia University's Jewish Collegiate Festival of the Performing Arts in New York City every spring. In addition to performing and showing the greater musical community what the Tri-co can produce, we watch many other groups perform at the Festival and we meet with the other groups in order to share styles, techniques, and tricks of the trade.
