Mandibulate mouthparts

Mandibulate mouthparts are mouthparts built for chewing.  This beetle (coleoptera) has very pronounced mandibulate mouthparts with large mandibles.  Because they are directed infront of the insect, they are prognathous.  This is useful for crawling under low spaces.
This grasshopper (orthoptera) also has mandibulate mouthparts, but they are directed toward the ground, or are hypognathous.  This is useful for grazing.
