The Midnight Quintett was founded in the Fall of 1999, when five us decided that (a) there needed to be more chamber music at Swarthmore, and that (b) Swarthmore's music department was not set up to handle it. So we rebelled from the single-group system and created our own fantastic chamber group. Led and mothered by the fantastic pianist Sarah Marsh ('00), we got funding from the department for coachings from David Szepessy, a fantastic cellist and mentor, and put on two full-length concerts. Our repertoire included Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Dohnányi, and Brahms. We kicked ass. Sophomore year we were still ass-kicking, minus Lisa L. and Sarah (lost to swimming and the real world, respectively) but plus Alyson Jones '02, violin II, and Peter Yoo '01 on piano. Debussy Quartet and Shostakovitch Piano Quintet. And after a Viennese semester, we're now reformed again, this time to play the Schumann Piano Quintet in early May. |
