I Wandered Lonely as a Valentine
A parody of I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud by William Wordsworth
I wandered lonely down the aisles
The signs read "Seasonal Ahead",
In front of me, for miles and miles
A host, of shades of pink and red;
The Christmas decorations gone,
Next shamrocks, at tomorrow's dawn.
The lace-trimmed boxes, full of sweets
With Snickers bars or Milky Ways
All molded into hearts, these treats,
They catch the eye from their displays:
"Please, buy us now!" they seem to wail,
"Tomorrow we will go on sale."
In March and April, pastels rule.
And then in June, red, white and blue.
When fall arrives, it's back to school!
And ghosts and pumpkins get their due.
I gazed--and gazed--and then I thought:
Our holidays are overwrought.
This morning, at my desk I sat.
Could I invent the Next Big Thing?
Perhaps I'll sell a Lincoln hat?
A chocolate Martin Luther King?
But none of these are as divine
As a heartfelt "Happy Valentine!"
