BAR GRAPHING ACTIVITY
After a lesson on bar graphing it was determined that the students needed more review.
For this reason I created an interactive bar graphing experience for the students that I outline below.
I decided that the best way for the students to learn how to make a bar graph was to personally do just that, make a bar graph, only this time they would be the bar graph as well. The class was called to the floor and presented with a template for a tally chart and a bar graph, but with nothing written on them. They were only told that we were going to make a tally chart and bar graph showing what the favorite specials (i.e. gym, art, music and library) were for the students in our class.
First the class labeled the tally chart with the correct information. Then each child was given a "tally" with his/her name written on it. Cluster by cluster they were called to the board to put their tally where it belonged. The class was also asked questions such as "What do you think is the most popular?" and "What will be the least popular?"
After the tally chart was complete the bar graph was labeled, each child received a "bar" with his/her name and it was also created. Below are the final products.
Here you can see the completed tally chart for the classes' favorite school specials on the left
as well as the completed bar graph on the right.
Here is the completed class tally chart and bar graph showing the favorite specials of the students.
Each student's tally chart and bar on the graph are labeled with their names.
After this interactive activity, the class was presented with data from "another class" that was surveyed to find out what their favorite colors were. They were given the tally chart and had to create a bar graph on their own using a template that was provided for them. This was turned in and graded on a 5 point scale for accuracy and neatness.
