Below are GIFs an Arabidopsis plant’s hypocotyl: the small stem that emerges from the seed. It was much thinner than the graphite in a wooden pencil. These images were taken with a confocal microscope. The two colors represent two different types of dye. As you can see, the microscope creates three-dimensional models of its subject. The GIFs are just recordings of a few interesting rotation patterns of these models. With the right software, you can click-and-drag the model at will.
I took these at Swarthmore, in Professor Nick Kaplinsky’s plant biology class.
