Although my home is technically in Willets, I spend a ridiculous amount of time in Mertz's haven for the procrastinating sophomore, leading to its nickname, the "Baker's Quad" {with me as the extra (do)nut}.Members of the actual quad include the schizophrenic voice masquerading as my sister, Diana, that speaks in the back of my head when I make these pages (and seems to think they're hers...) and Wendy, her Disney-loving roommate who always finishes her work on time and thus never seems to have enough work to suit the rest of the Quad. On the other side of the common room our friendly neighborhood WA, Amanda, who points out many (if not all) of my little grammatical blips, and her phantom roommate, Audrey, occasionally on loan from Lang, complete the official Quad quota.
The Quad is more a state of mind than a place - the entire Quad is rarely found in the same place at the same time, and when it happens it's rather like a reunion of long lost friends, i.e. we stay up late talking and don't get a lick of work done.
The Republic of Quad
Rather isolated at the end of the hall on Mertz 1st south, the Quad exists as an independent state (of mind). Although generally in favor of peace and democracy, several citizens of Quad began hatching plans take over the adjacent stairwell. This Manifest Destiny has since gained momentum and the entire dorm is now targeted for assimilation. All strategems are classified. We could tell you, but then We'd have to kill you. The plans are currently on hold while Quad members attempt to keep up with their course load - don't hold your breath.
It is the personal mission of Diana and myself to ensure that the Quad has seen just about every movie out there that we deem worth seeing. There are a lot of them. To this end the Quad has taken to study breaking in the afternoon on Saturdays to watch a selected film for a couple of hours. Escaping into the world of light-hearted fiction revives the brain for the evening's probable future in Cornell, or so we repeatedly tell ourselves in justification. Movies shown so far include:
- "Top Hat" - Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in a typically witty and beautifully choreographed good time
- "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers" - o.k., so the main reason I love this movie is because it contains what I consider to be the coolest dance sequence (Fred and Ginger aside) I've ever seen in a flim. The barn raising with two sets of suitors bidding for the girls - how could I not love this?
- "While You Were Sleeping" - So I'd seen it already. Many times. We love it. 'nuf said
- "Clueless" - Jove said his coworkers have a debate about whether this is a terrific movie or a terrible movie - there is no inbetween. We're definately on the positive side.
- "Some Kind of Wonderful" - Finally watched this one, not as a saturday afternoon movie, but rather on a saturday night during finals. What can I say - we're suckers for that cheesy '80s stuff.
