FAQ’s
- How did the Chester Mural Collective get started?
- Anna Torres, a student at Swarthmore College, worked with local artists, residents, members of the Freeman Cultural Arts Center, and others to create the Chester Mural Collective, which was originally supported by a grant from the Lang Center for Social Responsibility. In the summer of 2006, Michelle McIver assumed the position of director. We are currently supported by a grant from the Chester Youth Collaborative.
- What effect does a mural have on a neighborhood?
- In addition to the economic benefits of public art – increased property values and cultural appeal – murals can be an important part of community-building, encourage dialogue between residents about issues and themes of city life.
- I would like a mural for my storefront/home/street. How do I request one?
- The Chester Mural Collective does not make indoor murals for private residences; if you would like a mural in your home, however, we can put you in touch with one of our individual artists. If you are an educational program or small business, have an outdoor wall you'd like to donate, or just have a great idea for a mural site, please contact us at chestermurals at gmail dot com.
- How can I get involved?
- Are you a long-time artist? Just picking up a brush for the first time? Looking for a new way to make a positive change in your community? We welcome all volunteers, whatever your experience. Everyone can contribute in some way, whether it’s developing gardens to accompany the murals, working directly with youth, conducting community outreach, or simply picking up a brush. In addition, if you would like to make a donation, please contact us at chestermurals at gmail dot com. We appreciate all support, both monetary and in-kind.
- Where can I read more about your program?
- As one of the youth-serving organizations in the Chester Youth Collaborative, we have a page on their website; you can access that page here. In addition, because our program was originally supported by Swarthmore College, we have been profiled repeatedly in the college's publications. The alumni magazine, the Bulletin, published an article about us in the fall of 2006, available here. Finally, Anna Torres wrote a feature article about us for the Swarthmore website in the fall of 2006. You can see that article here.
Thank you for your interest in our program! We encourage you to get in touch with us.
