We meet once a week on Thursdays in Parrish Parlours, from 4:15 to dinner time. Our group provides a weekly time in which members of the Swarthmore community come together and knit and relax and enjoy each other's company. Our meetings enable aspiring knitters to learn a creative new skill and use it to create useful items such as mittens, hats, sweaters, and socks. We provide needles and yarn for all of our members.
Our true intention is to take over the campus with a campus-wide knitting frenzy. Or at least, that is Sam's goal.
Since last winter, we have been trying to build our pattern and reference book collection. We now subscribe to Vogue Knitting which comes out quarterly. We also have started to accumulate patterns for afghans, sweaters, hats, and unusual knitted items. We also connived the Budget Committe into giving us money for knitting workshops. Sophie's Yarns, a Philadelphia yarn store, offers weekend workshops in various knitting techniques. With our workshop money, we hope to subsidize individuals who are interested in learning and sharing newly acquired knowledge.
Most recent new stuff: We have just received another $137 from Budget Committee to fund new book purchases, supply updates, and beginner's yarn replacement. (Well, it may not seem like a lot to you, but we appreciate it.)
Our membership has been growing quickly. We currently have about one hundred and thirty e-mail list members, and our meetings have been very full. This year's freshmen class demonstrated great enthusiasm in knitting, and we hope that they continue to be involved. We encourage everyone, faculty, staff, and students, alike, to come participate in our weekly, casual meetings. Also, if you would like to be on the e-mail list, please e-mail us your address.
