When I was a small child I wanted to speak every language in the world, but as I became a not-so-small child I realized this was a bit ambitious of me, so I cut it down to seven. So far I've only conquered french, but my love of the language and involvement with it have affected my life so much that I thought it warrented a page of its own.
I began studying french in fourth grade once a week with a private tutor in a class of three - my sister, myself and my best friend Mia. To this day the three of us share our love of french and speak it together so we won't lose touch with it. I've managed to acquire quite a collection of french and french-canadian music, fallen in love with many french movies, and taken several trips to Montreal.
In the hopes that I can transmit some of my enthusiasm for language learning to others, I have spent part of the last two summers working as a counselor at Lac du Bois, a French site of Concordia Language Villages, a family of camps dedicated to bringing the world closer together through language teaching. There I found myself transformed into Camille and enjoyed a dedicated and unique community that I will always cherish.
Having been continent-bound throughout my life, I've never visited the parent country of my second language. I'd intended to go abroad there my junior year, but have since fallen in such deep love with Swarthmore that the idea has been lost in the shuffle. I currently dream of spending the summer of '98 watching the biggest event of another passion of mine, soccer.
